2,500-Year-Old Astronomical Observatory Uncovered in Egypt’s Nile Delta

Egyptian authorities have announced the discovery of a massive limestone observatory at the Buto site in Kafr El-Sheikh. The structure contains a large inclined sundial and stone markers aligned with the summer solstice and the rising of Sirius.

This is the largest and oldest observatory found in the Delta, proving that ancient Egyptians had systematized astronomical tracking for agricultural planning much earlier than previously thought. The site also contained bronze tools for celestial measurement.
