A new study published in the Temple Architecture Review reveals that the 'musical pillars' of the Vittala Temple were precision-engineered using specific densities of granite. Researchers used acoustic modeling to show how the pillars were tuned to produce specific frequencies corresponding to the Sapta Swaras of Carnatic music.
The study suggests that the architects possessed a deep knowledge of litho-acoustics. By varying the height and thickness of the pillars, they created a resonant environment that amplified Vedic chanting and traditional dance performances, effectively turning the temple mandapa into a giant musical instrument.
