Using ground-penetrating radar, archaeologists have identified a previously unknown subterranean chamber beneath the 'Palace of the Columns' in Mitla. Preliminary investigations suggest the vault contains the remains of high-status Zapotec lords and significant ritual offerings.
The Zapotec believed Mitla was a portal to the underworld, or 'Lyobaa.' This discovery provides an unprecedented opportunity to study Mesoamerican mortuary practices and the architectural secrets used to hide sacred spaces from Spanish conquistadors.
