Archaeologists using light-detection and ranging (Lidar) technology have mapped a massive, previously unknown Maya city hidden under the dense canopy of the Campeche jungle. The city, dubbed 'Ocomtún', contains pyramid temples, ball courts, and a complex system of causeways.
The scale of the site suggests it was a major regional center during the Classic period (250-1000 CE). This discovery was made possible by the ability of Lidar to 'see through' vegetation, revealing urban structures that are invisible from the ground.
