New excavations at the Harappan site of Rakhigarhi have uncovered a sophisticated network of tertiary drains and private bathing platforms. Unlike previously excavated areas, this new sector demonstrates a standardized use of kiln-fired bricks for water management, suggesting a central municipal authority even in the city's early phases.
Archaeologists also found evidence of 'soakage jars' placed at the intersections of drainage lines to filter solid waste, a remarkably modern concept in environmental engineering. This find reinforces the reputation of the Indus Valley Civilization as the world's first true masters of urban sanitation and public health.
