A team of international linguists has made a major breakthrough in deciphering a regional variation of the Linear Elamite script. By comparing inscriptions on recently discovered silver vessels with known Akkadian texts, the researchers have identified phonetic values for 30 previously unknown characters. This allows for the translation of royal inscriptions dating back to 2100 BCE.
The newly translated texts shed light on the diplomatic relations between the Elamite kings and the Sumerian city-states. This discovery is being hailed as a milestone in Ancient Near Eastern studies, as it provides a voice to a civilization that has remained largely silent for millennia due to the undeciphered nature of its writing system.
