Ancient Metallurgy Evidence Found at Chalcolithic Sites in Maharashtra

New research at the Inamgaon and Daimabad sites has identified advanced copper smelting techniques used by the Jorwe culture nearly 3,500 years ago. Analysis of slag heaps and furnace fragments reveals that ancient smiths were capable of reaching temperatures high enough to produce high-purity copper alloys, which were then used for ritual axes and ornaments.

This suggests that the Chalcolithic communities of Western India had a much more sophisticated pyrotechnological knowledge than previously assumed. The findings indicate a well-established internal trade for ores from the Aravalli range, highlighting the interconnectedness of early Indian metalworking traditions.
