Submerged Neolithic Settlement Found Off the Coast of Croatia

Underwater archaeologists have identified a 7,000-year-old submerged village off the coast of the island of Korčula, Croatia. Using satellite imagery and diver surveys, the team found a stone road and the foundations of circular dwellings preserved beneath layers of sea mud. The site is attributed to the Hvar culture, known for its sophisticated pottery and maritime skills.

The settlement is remarkably well-preserved due to the lack of strong currents in the area. Recovered artifacts include flint tools, obsidian knives, and ceramic fragments with geometric patterns. This discovery provides vital evidence of how prehistoric communities adapted to rising sea levels at the end of the last Ice Age and offers a rare glimpse into the early seafaring traditions of the Mediterranean.
