A team of archaeologists has unearthed the remains of a 2nd-century CE Buddhist Vihara (monastery) in the Swat Valley. The complex includes a small stupa surrounded by cells for monks, featuring unique Gandharan sculptures that blend Greek and Indian artistic styles.
The site has yielded several copper-plate inscriptions that mention local donors and the names of prominent teachers. This discovery clarifies the monastic layout and the spread of Mahayana Buddhism during the Kushan Empire's zenith.
