A team of Egyptian and Dominican archaeologists has discovered several mummies with gold-foil tongues at the Taposiris Magna site. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, this unique funerary practice was intended to allow the deceased to speak with Osiris, the god of the underworld, in the afterlife.
The mummies date back to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Along with the remains, the team recovered a hoard of coins depicting Queen Cleopatra VII and several intact statues of deities, providing new insights into the religious syncretism of the era.
