The Global Heritage Monitor reports that a major museum in Berlin has finalized an agreement to return several dozen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria. These artifacts, looted during the British Punitive Expedition of 1897, represent the cultural and historical legacy of the Kingdom of Benin.
This move follows a growing international trend of heritage restitution. The Nigerian government plans to house the repatriated items in the newly constructed Edo Museum of West African Art, where they will be accessible to the descendants of those who created them.
