Triassic Ichthyosaur Fossil Found in Svalbard Rewrites Marine Evolution

Paleontologists in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard have unearthed the remains of a primitive ichthyosaur from the Early Triassic. The fossil includes a nearly complete skull and paddle-like limbs, providing evidence that these marine reptiles evolved much faster following the Permian mass extinction than once thought.

The specimen shows transitional features between land-dwelling ancestors and fully aquatic hunters. This find suggests that the Arctic oceans were a primary cradle for marine reptile diversification 250 million years ago, challenging traditional paleogeography models.
