Excavations at the Zawar mines in Rajasthan have led to the discovery of a cache of wooden and stone tools used for zinc and silver mining, dating back to 400 BCE. These artifacts, remarkably preserved in the unique chemical environment of the mine shafts, demonstrate a high level of metallurgical sophistication in ancient India during the Mahajanapada period.
The find includes heavy-duty stone hammers and intricate wooden pulleys used for hoisting ore. Researchers believe these tools represent the earliest known systematic industrial mining operations in South Asia, highlighting the economic importance of the Aravalli range in the development of early Indian kingdoms.
