A joint Swiss-Greek archaeological team has uncovered a significant sanctuary dedicated to Artemis near the ancient city of Amarynthos on the island of Euboea. The excavation revealed a monumental building from the 6th century BCE, complete with a massive altar and a wealth of votive offerings, including bronze figurines and ivory jewelry.
The find is particularly important because it confirms the location of the legendary 'Artemision of Amarynthos,' a site mentioned in ancient texts but lost for centuries. The artifacts recovered provide new insights into the religious practices and economic status of the region during the Archaic and Classical periods of Greek history.
