The Indian government has officially submitted a revised dossier to UNESCO, seeking World Heritage status for the Majuli Island Cultural Landscape in Assam. As the world’s largest inhabited river island, Majuli is a unique hub of Neo-Vaishnavite culture, housing dozens of Satras (monasteries) that have preserved ancient art, dance, and music for over 500 years.
The proposal emphasizes the island's 'living heritage' and the sustainable traditional practices of the local Mising and Deori communities. UNESCO recognition is seen as vital for the preservation of the island, which faces severe threats from annual Brahmaputra floods and soil erosion.
