LiDAR Mapping Uncovers Extensive Maya Urban Network in Campeche Jungle

A massive, previously unknown network of Maya settlements has been identified beneath the dense canopy of the Campeche jungle in Mexico. Using LiDAR technology, researchers mapped over 6,000 structures, including pyramids, residential plazas, and elevated causeways connecting different urban centers.

The findings suggest that the Maya population in this region was much denser than previously estimated. The discovered infrastructure includes sophisticated agricultural terraces and water management systems, indicating a highly organized society capable of large-scale environmental engineering.
