Roman 'Ludus' Gladiatorial Training Ground Unearthed Near Ancient Carnuntum

Archaeologists in Austria have uncovered the foundations of a Roman gladiatorial school (Ludus) located just outside the walls of ancient Carnuntum. The site features a central training arena, heated barracks for the fighters, and a dedicated cemetery for those who died during training.

The find is significant as it is only the second such facility ever discovered in the Roman Empire, after the Ludus Magnus in Rome. Findings of wooden practice swords and specialized medical tools suggest a highly organized and disciplined environment for the training of provincial gladiators.
