Underwater archaeologists have completed a detailed survey of a 4th-century Byzantine church submerged in Lake Iznik. The structure, which lies three meters below the surface, is believed to have been built on the site where the First Council of Nicaea took place in 325 CE.
The excavation revealed intricate mosaic floors and several graves of high-ranking officials. Scientists believe the church was submerged following a massive earthquake in 740 CE, creating a 'time capsule' of early Christian architecture and liturgical space.
