Archaeologists Unearth 7th-Century Buddhist Temple Complex in Nateshwar, Bangladesh

A joint team of international archaeologists has revealed the extensive ruins of a 7th-century Buddhist temple complex in Nateshwar, located in the Munshiganj district of Bangladesh. The site features a unique pyramidal structure and several well-preserved Votive Stupas. This discovery provides crucial evidence of the flourishing Vajrayana Buddhist culture in the region during the transition from the Gupta to the Pala eras.

Excavations have uncovered a central cruciform shrine surrounded by cells for monks, suggesting the site served as both a place of worship and a center for higher learning. The discovery of clay seals with Sanskrit inscriptions and delicate terracotta ornaments confirms the high level of artistic and literary sophistication in early medieval Bengal. The Bangladesh government has announced plans to establish an on-site museum to protect the fragile brickwork.
