Solemn Homecoming: Zimbabwe Receives Ancestral Human Remains Looted During Colonial Era

Zimbabwean heritage officials received eight sets of ancestral human remains during a somber repatriation ceremony at the Iziko South African Museum on April 14, 2026. Originally exhumed from various graves across Zimbabwe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these remains were taken for "colonial pseudoscience" research and donated to South African collections as medical specimens.

South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie emphasized that the return is centered on justice, memory, and healing. The ancestors, including an individual identified as a MaKalanga chief, were returned in coffins draped in the Zimbabwean national flag, signaling a decisive shift in how African nations handle the sensitive legacy of colonial-era bioarchaeology and human dignity.
