The Fresco-Hunting Photo Research Expedition has officially launched its 2026 season, targeting the documentation and preservation of abandoned medieval chapels and churches across western Bulgaria. These modest stone structures, dating from the 14th to 17th centuries, contain rare and exquisite Orthodox iconography that is currently at risk due to structural decay and environmental factors.
The project, organized by the Anthropocene Research Center, aims to secure formal state protection for these "hidden temples" of Bulgarian heritage. Recent success includes the designation of several sites in Balsha and Zimevitsa as protected national monuments, ensuring the survival of their unique religious frescoes for future generations.
