Medieval bridges emerging from Hungary's Tisza River at risk

Archaeologists have issued an urgent call for the preservation of medieval bridge structures emerging from the receding waters of the Tisza River in eastern Hungary. The wooden and stone foundations, which date back to the late medieval period, have become visible due to fluctuating water levels, offering a rare glimpse into ancient transport networks and the engineering prowess of the era.

These structures are believed to have played a crucial role in local trade and ceremonial processions during religious and seasonal festivals in the middle ages. However, researchers warn that the sudden exposure to air and changing environmental conditions are causing rapid deterioration of the timber remains, necessitating immediate documentation and stabilization efforts by the National Archaeological Institute.
