Uncovering Ancient Reefs: Exploring Australia's Fossilized Marine Secrets

Scientists from Geoscience Australia have made an extraordinary discovery while drilling in the Adavale Basin of western Queensland. During a project aimed at locating underground hydrogen storage, the team instead unearthed a significant trove of fossils, including ancient corals, ammonites, and ferns dating back over 325 million years.

The findings, which include a solid rock core, provide new insights into the region's geological history. Researchers noted the presence of evaporative rocks, suggesting that the area was once home to highly saline water bodies that have since undergone massive transformation over millions of years.
