UNESCO has officially inscribed the 'Law Kyntang' or Sacred Groves of Meghalaya as a World Heritage Site. These ancient forest patches, protected by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes for over two millennia, serve as living museums of Sanatan-linked animist traditions and indigenous conservation methods.
The committee noted that the groves represent an unbroken lineage of ecological stewardship, where religious taboos have preserved rare medicinal plants and endangered species. This designation honors the spiritual heritage of the Northeast and recognizes it as a global model for the integration of cultural ritual with environmental preservation.
