Excavations in the Balkh province have revealed a fortified Kushan outpost dating back to the 2nd century BCE. The site features a central citadel with multi-story barracks and a large caravanserai, indicating its role as a strategic military and commercial hub on the Northern Silk Road.
Among the finds are Greek-inspired stone capitals, Buddhist reliquaries, and a cache of bronze coins depicting King Kanishka I. The discovery confirms the deep cultural syncretism of the region, where Hellenistic, Indian, and Central Asian influences converged to facilitate transcontinental trade.
