A team of Sanskrit scholars in Kerala has successfully deciphered a collection of 4th-century palm leaf manuscripts found in a family attic. The texts contain detailed protocols for treating chronic respiratory conditions using a combination of steam inhalation, herbal decoctions, and specific breathing exercises (Pranayama). The manuscripts emphasize the balance of 'Kapha' dosha and provide recipes for oils that are still used in traditional practice today.
This finding provides a vital historical link for the evolution of Ayurvedic science, showing that complex medical procedures were standardized much earlier than previously documented. The manuscripts also contain notes on the seasonal harvesting of medicinal plants.
