Study of Ancient Zinc Smelting Sites in Rajasthan Reveals Advanced Metallurgical Knowledge of the Vedic Period

New research into the ancient mines of Zawar, Rajasthan, has provided evidence of advanced zinc smelting techniques dating back to the late Vedic period. While the West only mastered large-scale zinc production in the 18th century, Indian metallurgists were using sophisticated downward-distillation retorts to extract pure zinc as early as the 1st millennium BCE. This process was essential for creating high-quality brass for temples and scientific instruments.

The study, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, details how ancient engineers managed extreme temperatures and chemical reactions. This finding confirms that ancient India was a global leader in metallurgy, contributing significantly to the development of early chemical engineering and material sciences mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts like the Rasaratna Samuccaya.
