Scientific Restoration of 12th-Century Kakatiya Gateways in Warangal Reveals Original Polychrome Pigments

A major restoration project at the Warangal Fort has utilized non-invasive laser cleaning technology to uncover the original colors of the iconic Kakatiya Kala Thoranam (gateways). Contrary to the long-held belief that these granite structures were left as bare stone, researchers found traces of mineral-based pigments including cinnabar red, orpiment yellow, and lapis lazuli blue. This suggests that the gateways were once vibrantly painted, reflecting the aesthetic grandeur of the Kakatiya dynasty.

Chemical analysis of the pigments indicates they were mixed with organic binders like neem gum and egg white to ensure durability against the elements. The restoration team is now working on a digital reconstruction to show the public how these gateways would have appeared during the reign of Rani Rudrama Devi. This project sets a new standard for the preservation of medieval Indian stone architecture.
