UNESCO has officially placed the Ancient Sacred Stepwells of Marathwada on its priority list for World Heritage designation. These structures, built between the 8th and 13th centuries, represent a pinnacle of Sanatan hydraulic engineering, featuring subterranean temples, intricate carvings of Varaha, and systems to harvest monsoonal runoff for year-round agriculture.
The designation aims to catalyze funding for the structural stabilization of over 40 major stepwells across the drought-prone region. Experts believe that reviving the original hydraulic principles of these sites could provide modern solutions to water scarcity while preserving their immense cultural value.
