Underwater Multi-Beam Sonar Maps 3rd-Century 'Sangam-Era' Brick Structures off the Coast of Dhanushkodi

A collaborative team of marine geologists and archaeologists has utilized Multi-Beam Sonar to identify a series of linear brick structures submerged off the coast of Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu. Preliminary dating suggests these ruins belong to the Sangam Era (c. 3rd century CE) and may represent the remnants of a vanished coastal settlement or signal tower network.

The geometry of the bricks and the mortar composition found in core samples match the architectural styles observed at terrestrial sites like Arikamedu and Keezhadi. This discovery supports the historical accounts of ancient Tamil maritime activity and suggests that rising sea levels or tectonic events submerged several high-density urban nodes along the Palk Strait.
