UNESCO has officially placed the Ancient Laterite Stone Fortifications along India’s Konkan coast on its priority list for World Heritage status. These maritime structures, some dating back to the 5th century, represent a unique tradition of coastal defense and indigenous architecture. The designation is expected to unlock international funding for the scientific preservation of these sites.
The fortifications include several water-based forts and signal towers that managed maritime trade for over a millennium. UNESCO emphasized the importance of the syncretic engineering seen in these forts, which utilized local materials to create earthquake-resistant structures. Local authorities have now initiated a comprehensive digital mapping project to document every surviving bastion and gateway.
