Fossilized Remains of a New 15-Million-Year-Old 'Indian Proto-Marsupial' Identified in the Godavari Basin

Paleontologists from the IIT Roorkee have announced the identification of a new species of primitive marsupial from fossils found in the Godavari River basin. Named Indodelphys godavariensis, the creature provides a critical link in understanding the biogeographic isolation of the Indian plate after its break from Gondwana.

The discovery challenges previous theories that marsupials were entirely absent from ancient India during the Miocene epoch. This find suggests that India acted as a biological corridor, preserving unique evolutionary lineages that survived the northward drift and eventual collision with Asia, offering a glimpse into a lost world of prehistoric Indian wildlife.
