Massive 3rd-Century Roman 'Cavalry Logistics Center' and Granary Uncovered Beneath Modern-Day Augsburg, Germany

Construction work in Augsburg, Germany, has led to the discovery of a massive 3rd-century Roman logistics hub. The complex includes a multi-tiered granary (horreum) with a sophisticated underfloor ventilation system and a specialized cavalry training ring capable of housing over 500 horses.

Archaeologists have recovered hundreds of iron horse-shoes, leather saddles, and specialized grain-tax ledgers written on lead tablets. The site was a critical supply point for Roman legions stationed along the Danube frontier, offering new insights into the massive bureaucratic and logistical efforts required to maintain the northern borders of the empire during its era of peak expansion.
