UNESCO has officially nominated the 'Ancient Subterranean Water-Management Chambers of the Vindhyan Escarpment' for its Heritage Priority list. These structures, dating from the 1st millennium BCE to the early medieval era, comprise an extensive network of rock-cut reservoirs and filtration tunnels that utilize the natural geology of the Vindhya mountains to harvest monsoon runoff.
The nomination recognizes the unique 'passive-cooling' and 'gravity-fed' engineering that allowed these sites to provide year-round water to arid regions without the need for pumps. UNESCO officials praised the system as a global model for sustainable climate adaptation based on ancient Sanatan heritage and traditional knowledge systems.
