UNESCO has officially added the 'Ancient Monolithic Burial Cairns of the Brahmaputra Valley' in Assam to its list of sites requiring priority protection. These megalithic structures, dating between 1000 BCE and 500 CE, represent a unique funerary architecture where massive river stones were used to house the remains of tribal elite.
The designation follows new archaeological findings that link these cairns to a sophisticated iron-working civilization that traded extensively with Southeast Asia. The UNESCO status will provide funding for the stabilization of the sites and the establishment of a dedicated heritage corridor to promote sustainable tourism in the region.
