Repatriation Milestone: Rare 10th-Century 'Pratihara Dynasty' Ganesha Returned to India from German Museum

In a major victory for heritage restitution, a German state museum has formally returned an exquisite 10th-century sandstone sculpture of Lord Ganesha to the Indian government. The artifact, a masterpiece of Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty art, was stolen from a rural temple in Rajasthan in the late 1960s and was identified through collaborative research between international art historians and the ASI.

The sculpture is celebrated for its high-relief carving and intricate detailing of the deity's ornaments and attendants. It will be housed in the National Museum in New Delhi before eventually being returned to its region of origin. This repatriation marks a significant step in the ongoing global effort to restore sacred Indian artifacts to their rightful heritage sites.
