Archaeologists have unearthed what is believed to be a 4th-century BCE training ground for the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu near the foothills of the Western Ghats in Kerala. The site features a specialized pit-style arena constructed with laterite blocks, consistent with the traditional Kuzhi Kalari architecture mentioned in early Sanskrit treatises on combat and physical culture.
The excavation revealed several ceremonial iron daggers and limestone weight-training implements, suggesting the site served as a regional hub for warrior training and Sanatan physical sciences. This discovery provides crucial physical evidence linking the early martial traditions mentioned in the Dhanurveda to concrete archaeological sites in Southern India.
