2nd-Century BCE 'Vedic Grammar Academy' with Intact Paninian Inscriptions Found in Himalayan Foothills

Archaeologists have uncovered a significant 2nd-century BCE educational complex in the lower Himalayas, specifically in the Dehradun valley. The site, identified as an ancient Gurukul or grammar academy, features unique slate inscriptions containing aphorisms from Panini’s Ashtadhyayi, suggesting a standardized system of Sanskrit instruction during the late Mauryan or early Shunga period.

The excavation revealed a central assembly hall surrounded by small residential cells for students. Researchers noted that the layout of the complex follows precise Vedic Vastu guidelines, with specific acoustic properties designed to amplify the resonance of oral chanting. This discovery is being hailed as one of the earliest physical evidences of organized Sanskrit education in the region.
