Villagers in a remote corner of the Bundelkhand region have stumbled upon a hidden grotto containing a pristine 10th-century monolithic sculpture of Lord Surya. The idol, carved from local sandstone, features the characteristic Pratihara-style finesse, with the sun god depicted on a chariot drawn by seven horses.
Archaeologists from the ASI note that the sculpture's location suggests it was part of a 'forest shrine' designed to catch the equinox sunrise. The find is considered significant for studying the spread of solar cults in Central India and the evolution of temple iconography during the early medieval period.
