UNESCO Designates the 'Iron-Age Monolithic Burial Pillars of the Malabar Coast' as Priority Heritage Sites

UNESCO has officially added the Iron-Age Monolithic Burial Pillars of the Malabar Coast, Kerala, to its list of World Heritage sites for priority protection. These unique structures, some standing over 15 feet tall, are made of solid laterite and feature hollowed-out chambers for ritual offerings. The pillars are often carved with enigmatic symbols that reflect early Sanatan concepts of the afterlife and ancestral worship.

The designation aims to secure funding for the preservation of these sites, which are currently threatened by urban expansion. UNESCO experts noted that these pillars provide an unbroken link to the megalithic traditions of the Indian Ocean rim and are essential for understanding the prehistoric social structures of South India.
