Unlooted 22nd-Dynasty 'Master of Royal Records' Tomb Discovered in Saqqara with Indo-Egyptian Trade Papyri

Egyptian authorities have announced the discovery of a perfectly preserved tomb belonging to an 'Overseer of Royal Records' from the 22nd Dynasty. While the sarcophagus is intact, the most sensational find is a leather-bound chest containing trade papyri that explicitly detail the import of Malabar peppercorns and sandalwood from the land of 'Punt-Bharata'.

The documents include a diplomatic exchange of botanical seeds, confirming that Egypt was actively attempting to cultivate Indian medicinal plants in the Nile delta during the 9th century BCE. This find provides the most direct textual evidence to date of sustained, high-level diplomatic and economic ties between the Pharaonic court and the Indian subcontinent.
