In a historic move for cultural diplomacy, the Kyoto National Museum has returned an exquisite 9th-century monolithic Ganesha sculpture to the state of Karnataka. The artifact, a masterpiece of Rashtrakuta-era stone carving, was part of a private Japanese collection for over 50 years before being identified as a looted item from a temple site near Badami.
The sculpture is celebrated for its unique 'Gaja-Vyuha' style, featuring intricate floral patterns and celestial motifs that are characteristic of the high art of the Deccan plateau. The repatriation ceremony marks a new era of cooperation between Japan and India in tracking and returning stolen Indian heritage.
