Excavations in the Son Valley of Madhya Pradesh have revealed an expansive 5th-century industrial complex dedicated to the production of 'sacred alloys' (Panchaloha). The site contains dozens of intact clay kilns, crucibles, and specialized cooling vats that indicate a large-scale, state-sponsored operation during the Gupta Empire.
Archaeometallurgists have found evidence of advanced zinc distillation and copper-tin alloying techniques that produced metal with exceptional corrosion resistance. This site is believed to be the source of many of the legendary bronze and iron icons found across North India, proving that the 'Golden Age' of India was underpinned by significant industrial and chemical mastery.
