Research conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has utilized lead and tin isotope analysis to trace the origin of metal used in early Erlitou culture bronzes. The study found a distinct chemical signature matching tin deposits in the Malay Peninsula and Eastern India, suggesting a vast Bronze Age maritime network connecting East and South Asia.
This discovery provides hard scientific evidence for long-distance metal trade between the early Chinese dynasties and South Asian mining centers nearly four millennia ago. It highlights the role of maritime logistics in the technological development of early states across the Indo-Pacific region.
