3rd-Century Roman 'Time Capsule' Found in a Frontier Fort Along the Rhine

During a rescue excavation in modern-day Germany, archaeologists discovered a lead-sealed iron box embedded in the foundation of a Roman limbes fort. Termed a 'Time Capsule' by the team, the box contains a rare collection of personal items belonging to a high-ranking officer, including a silver-inlaid belt buckle, a set of wax writing tablets with still-legible Latin script, and a stash of gold coins from the reign of Emperor Aurelian.

The writing tablets contain a series of personal letters describing the challenges of maintaining the frontier during the Crisis of the Third Century. This find is significant because it provides a first-person perspective on the daily life and military anxieties of Roman soldiers stationed at the edge of the empire during a period of extreme political instability.
