An interdisciplinary project at the Centenary Library of Manuscripts has utilized a new transformer-based AI model to decipher a heavily damaged 8th-century palm-leaf manuscript found in Karnataka. The text has been identified as a previously unknown medical treatise, potentially authored by a student of the Susruta school, focusing exclusively on Vata-Vyadhi, or disorders of the nervous system.
The manuscript details a comprehensive classification of tremors and paralysis, linking them to specific anatomical pathways in the spine. Scholars are particularly excited by the section on rehabilitative therapy, which describes a series of physical movements and dietary protocols that bear a striking resemblance to modern neuromuscular physiotherapy. This discovery provides a missing link in the evolution of ancient Indian clinical neurology.
