Ancient Inscriptions Uncovered in Homs Point to the Long-Lost Site of the Imperial Roman Temple of the Sun

Recent restoration work at the Great Mosque of Homs in Syria has led to the accidental discovery of Greek inscriptions that offer definitive clues to the location of the long-lost Temple of Elagabalus. Dedicated to the sun god Sol Invictus, the temple was one of the most prominent religious sites in the Roman East during the 3rd century, housing a sacred black meteorite.

Scholars believe the temple was likely repurposed as a Christian church and later converted into a mosque following the Islamic conquest. The new inscriptions, revealed after decades of restricted access, provide critical data on the architectural transition of the site and the influence of the Severan dynasty on regional religious practices. This discovery resolves a long-standing debate among archaeologists regarding the temple's physical footprint within the urban landscape of ancient Emesa.
