Pristine 26th-Dynasty 'Royal Oculist' Tomb Uncovered at Saqqara with Rare Obsidian Surgical Instruments

Excavations at the Saqqara necropolis have led to the unearthing of a beautifully decorated tomb belonging to a high-ranking official named Psamtik-Seneb, who served as the Royal Oculist (Eye Physician) during the 26th Dynasty. The burial chamber contains a massive limestone sarcophagus and walls adorned with vibrant reliefs showing the physician performing medical procedures and presenting offerings to Thoth, the god of wisdom and healing.

The most remarkable find within the tomb is a wooden box containing a set of obsidian surgical tools, including fine-pointed needles and scalpels designed for delicate ocular surgery. This discovery provides the first physical evidence of the specialized medical instruments described in ancient Egyptian medical papyri. Archaeologists also found dozens of faience amulets of the 'Eye of Horus,' which were likely intended to provide the deceased with spiritual protection for his vision in the afterlife.
