Foundation of 8th-Century Pallava-Era 'Varaha' Temple Identified Beneath Kanchipuram Residential Quarter

Urban infrastructure work in the temple city of Kanchipuram has inadvertently led to the discovery of a structural foundation belonging to the Pallava Dynasty. Ground-penetrating radar confirmed the presence of a granite plinth featuring unique Grantha inscriptions that dedicate the site to Varaha, the boar avatar of Vishnu. The architectural style matches the 'Rajasimha' era, characterized by ornate lion-based pillars and complex masonry.

The find is particularly significant as it features a subterranean sanctum design, a rarity in mainland Pallava architecture. Local authorities have halted construction in the area to allow the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a full salvage excavation. Preliminary findings suggest the temple was abandoned in the 10th century after a major flood event from the Vegavathi River silted the lower chambers.
