A rare birch-bark manuscript fragment of the Kashyapa Samhita, discovered in a high-altitude Tibetan monastic library, has been successfully deciphered by a team of Sanskrit scholars. The text, dating to the 8th century, contains previously unrecorded sections on Kaumarabhritya (pediatrics), specifically detailing protocols for the thermal regulation and feeding of premature infants.
The manuscript describes the use of specialized herbal oil incubators and rigorous hygiene standards for caregivers, which scholars believe are remarkably advanced for the era. The findings provide new insights into the breadth of ancient Indian medical science and its transmission across the Himalayas into the Tibetan plateau during the early medieval period.
